No. 3: Day in the Life - where things get a bit more complex
My mornings are generally very straight forward on purpose. They are almost always the same, even when I’m traveling for work I try to maintain a similar consistency. This repetition allows my mind to enter into an incredibly hectic schedule with more ease. That is my biggest tip for time management, because repetition does tend to influence comfort and ease. (I like to think of it as myself practicing for the concert of my life, helps me sleep better at night 😄)
Many folks know me as someone who is always busy and always doing many things. Queen of the hustle, QUEEN of the side hustle. I do love a side hustle.
My day job: Executive Director of the @indigenouscuratorialcollective
Another full time “gig”: PhD Candidate at Queen’s University
Side hustles and interests:
1. Board member: Artspace in Peterborough
2. Board member: Toronto Biennial of Art
3. On the curatorial team of MOMENTA 2021
4. Artistic Practice: Just finished an art work for “Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts”
5. On OCAD’s Indigenous Education Council
6. On the City of Toronto’s Economic and Culture Recovery Advisory
7. A member of the City of Kingston’s Public Art Working Group
8. Teaching fellow in the winter semester for the second edition of a course I developed focusing on Indigenous Women in Hip Hop (yes, very fun)
9. Learning piano: weekly lessons
If I’m being totally honest, the majority of my days are spent writing emails, being in Zoom meetings, and staring at spreadsheets - super unsexy. I think a lot of us are in the same boat. It’s so annoying, but is how things get done.
This post highlights why my bud suggested I do this “Day in the Life” series. How do I do all of this and maintain a life? It does come down to how I manage my time of course, but more than this I have learned from myself when I am the most productive for particular kinds of work.
Where it all starts: images of my home office set up (for now). I live in Toronto, space is tight and yes I work in a closet. But sometimes Kulu and I will turn the backyard into our office for a day 🌾
