until it swells
Until it Swells is a public art piece comprised of two banners to be installed to hang on the exterior facade of Open Space in Victoria, BC. The banners depict imagery that makes reference to the impact of invasive species and how our impact as humans effects the coastlines we live and travel along.
Accompanying the banners is a line of text that sits above the entryway into the building. The text is intended to be a prompt and thought experiment for viewers.
Using cut out imagery, the banners speak to temporal layerings as well as the complexity of shifting ecosystems as invasive species proliferate and change the makeup of our environments. The small banner on the left portrays the coast line of greater Victoria and the topographical depiction of local mountains that are placed on top of an image of dense Scotish Broom. On the larger banner on the right, a close up image of the bark of a fir tree is overlayed with colour blocked depictions of plants that benefit and regenerate our ecosystems. Lichen in this instance is used as an example of rehealing, growing in sometimes impossible circumstances.
can we ever go back from going beyond—or do we wait until the swell softens?
Text connects the nature of invasive species with irreparable changes we humans create in these ecosystems.
